The Time Ball was mounted in 1909 on the roof of the Fairmont Hotel at the top of Nob Hill. Until 1937 it was dropped each day at noon, in order to provide a time check for chronometers of the vessels in the harbor. A smaller ball was used at the Telegraph Hill semaphore station in the early 1850s.
